Kickstarter Charts

The Economist recently posted some charts and data from Kickstarter’s 2012 to their graphics blog, inviting others to give their take on how to visualize the data:

Crowdcharting, anyone? [Graphic Detail]

Here are the two simple charts I’d start out with – they’re not as visually appealing as the parallel coordinate charts in their post, but I think they do a pretty good job of showing what’s in the data.  I have always had a hard time reading parallel coordinate charts so I prefer not to use them.

While it would have been possible to scale size of the points in the first plot to convey the size of each category, I thought that made the pledge amount-success rate relationship a little hard to see, so I decided to show the category size information in the second chart instead.
